Patients with stroke-related upper limb impairments should engage in rehabilitation activities to speed their recovery and return to normal daily activities. Robots can aid patients in doing actual exercises or training movements utilizing the manipulators or other tools that rehabilitation therapists use, which can help free up therapists' time to care for other patients. Nowadays, technology is becoming more vital in healthcare. It is therefore critically necessary in this area of medicine to build a cooperative robot-assisted upper limb rehabilitation exercise prototype that can generate specialized training programs that the patients may safely complete with the robot. In this study, the right deltoids, right biceps, and right triceps of nine healthy volunteers were examined for their patterns of EMG signals. For a run of 30 seconds, the participants were instructed to carry out horizontal abductions and adductions as well as elbow flexions and extensions. The results demonstrated that the signals generated by the rehabilitation robot arm were comparable to those generated free-handed, and that there was a significant, if very little, reduction in signal voltage when employing the robot arm. This demonstrates that these prescribed movement sequence criteria are suitable for upper limb stroke rehabilitation and are established as effective strategies for rehabilitation, and can be improved by trial with patients with upper limb injuries for more accurate results. Future research can focus on evaluating the feasibility and analysis of the practicality of integrating EMG sensor technology into existing rehabilitation programs for post-stroke patients in the future, and the potential benefits of enhanced therapy capacity and optimized exercise customization. 30 cm..

Sago Starch Based Intumescent Material with Borax and Rice Husk Addition /

Brunei Darussalam : Universiti Teknologi Brunei, 2023 . xi, 80 Pages : , Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science. | Abstract This paper presents a novel intumescent flame retardant (IFR) material synthesized by utilizing a local resource and agricultural waste to meet the demand for sustainable IFRs, whereby Sago starch will act as a Carbon source in the IFR system while Rice Husk is added as a filler to enhance the flame retardancy of the Sago-based IFR. In this study, Borax is incorporated as an insect repellent, and to simultaneously reinforce the barrier effect of IFR. The thermal performance and cooling behavior of the IFR were assessed through a flammability test whereby one side of the IFR was subjected to intense flame for a duration of 15 minutes. The IFR with the optimal behavior will also be investigated. This study successfully develops Sago-based IFR. Through the flammability test, both Borax and RH showed the potential to enhance the flame retardancy of IFR by improving its thermal insulation and thermal stability. However, through the investigation, it is found that the combination of Sago starch, Borax, and RH seems to have an antagonistic effect, whereas the combination of Borax and Sago starch exhibits a synergistic effect. The flammability test also determined that IFR consisting of 34g of Sago starch and 21g of Borax, without the addition of RH was found to exhibit optimal flame retardancy. From the analysis of IFR's cooling behavior, it is observed that IFRs with great thermal insulator ability were also found to have slower cooling rates than those with poor flame retardance properties. The outcomes of this study will contribute to developing sustainable, locally derived intumescent materials that could potentially be utilized for thermal insulation and fire prevention. It produces two-dimensional images of pixel displacement, which can be interpreted based on motion relative to the undeformed sample. This project involves laboratory experiments and computer simulations for analysis. A DIC setup includes a Universal Testing Machine (UTM), a personal phone camera, light sources, a laptop for processing images, and Ncorr software, an open-source 2-dimensional DIC software within MATLAB. Dog bone-shaped from aluminum sheets are fabricated in a workshop and an open-source software is used to generate a random speckle pattern. The pattern is applied to the samples along the gauge length, allowing Ncorr software to characterize individual subsets. The experimental variables are the thickness of the dog bone-shaped aluminum samples subjected to load, with thicknesses of 1 mm, 2 mm, and 3 mm. Validation of DIC results involves data from the load against displacement graph from the UTM. The DIC results provide displacement at each time interval, synchronized with the UTM tensile test duration. Pixel quality of cameras affects the accuracy and reliability of DIC results. The experimental setup uses a 10 Megapixel camera recording at 1080p at 30 frames per second, is chosen based on storage space and available DIC processing memory. Post-processing of images can reduce noise, increase sharpness, and maintain high contrast between white and dark spots. The accuracy of DIC results can also be determined by comparing the percentage difference in displacement between DIC results and UTM tensile test results. This research has novelty in knowledge advancement as this portable setup can be utilized in Universiti Teknologi Brunei's Material Testing Centre to measure material behavior and verify the results from the traditional FEA methods. 30 cm..

This reflects that Brunei Darussalam lacks innovation, particularly in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This is unfortunate as innovation is perceived as an important tool for SMEs to obtain better financial performance (FP). Government support (GS) towards innovation in other nations is found to have a positive impact on FP. However, it is not certain how SMEs in Brunei could benefit from it. Thus, the purpose of this study is to examine the impact of innovation on the FP of SMEs in Brunei as well as to investigate the the moderating impact of GS towards innovation on the FP of SMEs. Data was collected using a questionnaire from 92 SMEs in the manufacturing and service sectors in Brunei. Data was analysed using the multiple regression analysis. The findings of this study confirm that innovation, which includes product innovation, process innovation, marketing innovation, organisational innovation has positive significant impact on financial performance. However, GS has insignificant moderating impact on the relation between innovation & FP. Among all of the types of innovation, organisational innovation is found to have the strongest impact on FP. The study's limitation is that it doesn't go into more depth about how companies should assess their performance and whether implementing specific types of innovation into practice is worthwhile. Another drawback is that the study only had a small sample size, thus not all SMEs in Brunei are represented. The main contribution of this study is that it explores the gap by investigating the role of GS within the manufacturing and service sectors in Brunei. Development and application of rice starch-based edible food packaging : incorporating hydrophilic and hydrophobic plasticizers /

Bandar Seri Begawan : Universiti Teknologi Brunei, 2023 . xv, 119 pages : , Submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science (by Research) | ABSTRACT This study aims to develop rice starch-based edible food packaging films by incorporating hydrophilic (glycerol) and hydrophobic (coconut oil, palm oil, sesame seed oil, sunflower oil, and beeswax plasticizers to enhance their functional properties. The hypothesis is that different plasticizers will significantly influence the films' physical, mechanical, barrier. antioxidant, cytotoxicity, and biodegradability properties. Rice starch-based biofilms were developed using these plasticizers through a solution-casting method. Physical properties like thickness remained consistent, ranging from 0.221 mm to 0.268 mm. The incorporation of coconut oil resulted in higher opacity due to increased saturated fatty acid content. Light microscopy revealed irregularly shaped rice starch granules, dispersed oil droplets, and granular structures with beeswax. Mechanical properties varied, with coconut oil improving elongation at break and sunflower oil increasing the modulus of elasticity. Sesame seed oil showed lower solubility and water swelling due to weaker interactions with starch. Fourier-transform infrared analysis indicated hydrogen bond formation between starch and plasticizers. Beeswax demonstrated the highest antioxidant activity. The films exhibited negligible toxicity in the brine shrimp lethality assay, indicating potential biocompatibility. However, the presence of plasticizers may hinder biodegradation, with coconut oil films degrading slower due to higher saturated fatty acids. Overall, the films degraded rapidly in soil and compost, showing promise as eco-friendly materials. In practical applications, the films with coconut oil exhibited enhanced inhibition of total plate count, yeast, and molds during 7 days of storage at both refrigerated and room temperature conditions. Decreased pH during peanut storage was attributed to natural biochemical processes and microbial activities producing organic acids. Beeswax minimized weight loss by reducing moisture evaporation. These findings suggest that coconut oil and beeswax can enhance food safety and preservation, making them suitable components in biodegradable food packaging materials and addressing food spoilage and waste challenges. Additionally, incorporating specific hydrophilic and hydrophobic plasticizers into rice starch-based films can significantly enhance their functional properties, making them a viable alternative to conventional plastic packaging. It is a disease found on the heart, blood vessels or any part of the circulatory system. Machine learning refers to the study of computer system which uses algorithms and datasets to adapt, learn, and predict the values with a bare human intervention. This research proposes the applications of machine learning to predict CVD. Machine learning models was assembled with four different algorithms and two datasets converted from regional risk charts data with each dataset having two variants and standardised. The model is trained ten times to further clarify its performance. Performance is determined by the metrics of the Mean R'(coefficient of determination) and cross validation accuracy to measure their performance. Best performing algorithm is Random Tree with a mean R° score range of up to 0.9807 with standard deviation of 0.0031 to 0.0069. Mean CV (Cross Validation) ranges from 0.6996 to 0.8782 with standard deviations of 0.1413 to 0.2726. The low standard deviations and high CV scores implies stability and low variance in predicting CVD. KNN (K Nearest Neighbour) and Linear Regression performs very moderately but SV (Support Vector Machine) obtained the highest mean R° scores from 0.9214 to 0.9978 with standard deviations of 0.0003 to 0.0175. However, the cross validation is very low (highest is 0.0270) and it obtained very high standard deviations when compared to the other algorithms. This indicates the presence of overfitting or lack of compatibility with the datasets. In conclusion, using the risk charts as substitute for as a Bruneian dataset offered a valuable perspective that CVD risk charts could be converted and used as a dataset to reliably predict CVD as shown with results. The findings of this study unveiled two innovative and environmentally friendly methods for fabricating sago starch nano- and microparticles: high-pressure homogenization and ultra-fine grinding. These methods offer numerous advantages, including low cost, large-scale production capacity, and chemical-free processes. By utilising these approaches, the study demonstrated the feasibility and viability of incorporating sago starch into green packaging solutions. The implications of this research extend beyond conventional packaging practices. The thesis highlights the importance of smart packaging systems and their applications in the food supply chain. It emphasized the development of diagnostic tools for intelligent food packaging, particularly in determining meat freshness. Moreover, the study explores the use of active packaging with phenolic compounds to enhance food preservation. Additionally, the thesis probe into the creation of indicator films, referred to as Smart Micro-Composites (SMCs), using sago starch microparticles. These films exhibited remarkable characteristics such as water solubility, absorption capacity, pH-sensitivity, and ammonia sensitivity. The incorporation of innovative components like butterfly pea anthocyanin and 'Daun Kesum/Polygonum minus' extracts further enhanced the films' effectiveness in monitoring food quality, including spoilage detection. In summary, this research presents sago starch as a highly promising, eco-friendly solution for smart packaging. The breakthrough fabrication methods, along with the development of indicator films, showcase the transformative potential of sago starch in revolutionizing the packaging industry.
