Heat and air flow in the attic can be modeled using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques (CFD). CFD is the most detailed approach to predicting airflow, but it is more computationally intensive and is difficult to integrate into building simulation programs to determine the impacts on heating/cooling loads and building energy use. The attics will be modeled in 3D using the CFD and the data such as its dimension and pitch angles will be included. The CFD will then automatically shows the end result that is needed. These quantified relationship between roof pitches, airflow and heating load will provide the information on scientific guidance for residential roof design. From the observation of the results, vented attics have lower heat transfer at the ceiling. Hence, when there is less heat entering the house, less energy is needed for the cooling load. As for the roof pitches, it is stated that increasing in roof pitches will increase in cost. It is undesirable as it can restrict productivity and causes erosion in the pipes. There are numerous ways in detecting the activity or erosion in a pipe and it has been developed over time such as thin layer activation method, field signature monitoring method, electrical resistance probe, and acoustic probe. The aim of this research is to study the different types of sand monitor and specifically intrusive sand probes along with the effect of varying parameters on the erosion rate. These parameters include the sand particle sizes, the amount of sand particle, and the mixture flow velocity. In this study, fabrication of the design model could not be realized due to certain issues. Hence, several designs for the piping system are brought forth to be proposed as the methodology in achieving the objectives set for this project. Several issues of possible results and problems from the proposed design is discussed in the latter chapter. However, moderate development has been done on this sector and most of the economy growth is still contributed by oil and gas industry. This shows that there is a gap in order to boost the manufacturing sector in Brunei Darussalam. Therefore, this research takes a step towards identifying the gaps in manufacturing sector in Brunei. The main objectives of this research are to identify the internal gap in manufacturing sector in Brunei Darussalam and also the external gap between Brunei and Malaysia manufacturing sector. In order to obtain the data, interviews are conducted in eight of the manufacturing sector in Brunei. The manufacturing companies interviewed in Brunei are food and beverage companies, construction companies and electrical company. Literature review is done for Malaysia manufacturing sector. From the findings, the gap present internally are due to lack of resources, small market in Brunei, lack of local skilled manpower and lack of local workers. On the other hand, the gaps present externally between Brunei and Malaysia are the same as the gap present internally. However, bigger gap is found in term of market and exports. This is because there is a bigger market and vast export opportunities in Malaysia when compare with Brunei. Therefore, from the findings, solutions in tackling the problems can be proposed. Hence, improvement on the existing manufacturing sector in Brunei can be done. Some of the solutions are by developing the sector in utilizing the available raw material in Brunei, promote and attempt to export to the neighboring countries, polish talented young generation or expert in this sector and provide more benefits to attract local to work in the manufacturing sector. Therefore, the study conducted on different chicken to cow manure composition mix and feed into the anaerobic digester rigs. The result shows effective generation of biogas from mixing 70% cow manure and 30% chicken manure with cumulative gas yield of 36.7 litres and expected average gas yield per day of 2.45 /day and the biogas yield per kilogram of slurry of 2.04 l/kg was the highest record among all tested chicken to cow manure mixing ratio composition. But unfortunately due to limitation on gas detector device methane gas could not be detected although some other gas was detected. The affecting parameters also know with temperature in average of 27°C with a pH level closer to 7 is productive in biogas yield in 30-days retention. Due to the biogas generated could not be combust a filtration of gas was recommended to get a concentrated methane gas for future study on the calorific value of this biogas. 30 cm..

In recent years, Brunei has become more vulnerable to flooding. Therefore, it is crucial to comprehend important climate indicators, such as temperature and precipitation to minimise its impacts. The first phase of this study analysed the trend of observed temperature and rainfall in the past by using the linear regression and Mann- Kendall test. The results revealed that all observed temperature and precipitation variables experience significant positive trends at a confidence level of more than 90%. The second phase of this study assessed the performance of statistical downscaling model to downscale GCM results of maximum and minimum temperatures along with precipitation in Brunei Darussalam. It investigated future climate changes based on various scenarios of HadCM3, CGCM3 and CanESM2 with the implementation of bias correction. Monthly sub-model is proved to assess more satisfactorily than annual sub-model. This study revealed inferior correlation with the observed but illustrated acceptable application for generation of future periods 2017-2046 and 2047-2076. This study illustrated that Tmax and Tmin of H3A2 and H3B2 projected to increase significantly up to 0.54°C, by 2076. In the case of precipitation, H3B2 projected an increase in precipitation with no significant negative trend. H3A2 was consistent with CGCM3 and CanESM2 in predicting increasing trend of maximum and minimum temperature associated with decreasing trend of precipitations. CanESM2 with RCP8.5 scenario was recognised as maximum trend of Tmax at a rate of 0.014 °C per year. The highest prediction of average maximum temperatures by 2076 is to increase by 1.4 °C. The same model predicts an increasing trend of Tmin of 0.004 °C per year while the highest trend is seen under CGCM3-A2 scenario which is 0.009°C per year. The highest change predicted for the Tmin is therefore 0.9 °C by 2076. The precipitation showed a maximum trend decrease of 12.7 mm year. It is also seen in the output using CanESM2 data that precipitation will be more chaotic with some reaching 4800 mm per year and also producing low rainfall about 1800 mm per year. These consistent results demonstrate that the climate in Brunei Darussalam is likely to get warmer and drier with sudden heavy downpour in the future. 30 cm .

Sources and Mitigation Strategies of Debris along Brunei Coast /

Studies having standard results about debris for many coastal areas around the globe are still missing including 161 km long Brunei coast. In this study, six representative beaches classified into three groups namely A (recreational based), B (riverine estuaries) and C (with sea based litter) were selected. Accumulation survey method was used for debris collection from selected sites. Collected debris have been investigated physically (number. weight, size and colour), chemically (qualitative analysis) by using FTIR spectroscopy and statistically to address the existing situation of the coast along Brunei Darussalam. The area selected for study was 110 x 30 m² for group A, 110 x 27 m² for Lumut beach and 110 x 25 m² for Seri Kenangan beach in group B and 110 x 25 m² for group C depending upon the beach location. Results show that 90.02% of whole debris found was plastics by number followed by lumber (3.29%), rubber (2.52%), miscellaneous (2.37%), metal (0.73%), glass (0.70%) and fibre (0.36%). While by weight metal was the leading portion (39.30%) followed by plastic (39.12%), lumber (8.38%), rubber (5.74%), miscellaneous (4.91%), glass (2.18%) and fibre (0.37%). Plastic material was further characterized by size (micro (≤5mm), meso (5-20 mm), macro (21-100 mm) and mega (> 100 mm) and colour (transparent, coloured, white and black) due to its abundance, long life and severe adverse impacts. By size macro plastics were leading part (55.65%) by number followed by mega (24.95%), meso (13.96%) and micro (5.44%), while by weight 73.54%, 19.35%, 4.55% and 2.56% respectively. On the basis of colour, the most dominant part was transparent (35.83% by number and 44.94% by weight) followed by white (31.27% by number and 24.95% by weight), coloured (30.63% by number and 21.19% by weight) and black (2.27% by number and 8.92% by weight). Indicator items were used to find the sources and distribution trends of plastic material along the coast. Tourism and land based debris was found more dominant during this study. Mitigation strategies were proposed on the basis of different practices in the world, local weather condition and distribution trend of debris in Brunei Darussalam. As a consequence, introduction of engineering and management practices simultaneously can reduce the load of debris. The information gathered and manipulated in this dissertation will help the Government of Brunei Darussalam and UNEP to conduct more research and to take environmental management decisions in future. 30 cm .
