, Submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for degree of Master of Science | Piping work pack is a document defines the scope of work, activities and materials required to execute the project maintenance for piping scope. Site survey is a mandatory process in the development of piping work pack for offshore maintenance project.
Sometimes it cannot be completed as per schedule due to some reasons such as: bad weather, operation priority, unavailability of seat for offshore traveling and sometimes movement restriction due to any pandemic situations such as Covid 19, Monkeypox, etc.
These situations may give uncertainty on the ability of design team to deliver the design engineering work pack as per schedule. The alternative way of survey is to do desktop survey utilizing 3D model. However, it requires assessment on effectiveness of this desktop survey on its quality performance, productivity, and cost prior to utilize it as a new norm in the development of piping work packs for offshore maintenance project.
This research aimed to assess the effectiveness of this desktop survey. Sample of 5 offshore maintenance projects with total 342 piping work packs developed with site survey and 160 piping work packs developed with desktop survey were taken from Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP) offshore restoration, maintenance, and construction (ORMC) project. The assessment on effectiveness was done using statistical comparative analysis between site survey and desktop survey using T-Test and Mann-Whitney methods with
confidence interval 95% (a = 5%). Based on this analysis, it was found that desktop survey
has no significant difference on quality performance ratio with site survey (P-value is
0.451), it means desktop survey has same quality performance with site survey. While for productivity, it was found that there is significant difference between site survey and desktop survey (P-value is 0.038), it means desktop survey has significant higher productivity than site survey. Similar decision was made also for Cost ratio for desktop survey without laser dimensional scanning (LDS), there is significant difference between desktop survey (without LDS) and site survey (P-value is 0.000), it means that desktop survey (without LDS) has significant higher cost efficiency than site survey. However, when the LDS is required due to unavailability of 3D model, there is no significant difference on the cost ratio between desktop survey (with LDS) and site survey (P-value is 0.144), it means desktop survey (with LDS) has same cost efficiency with site survey.
Based on the assessment for overall indicators (quality, productivity, and cost), it was found that desktop survey without LDS has a significant different with site survey (P-value is 0.018), It means desktop survey without LDS has ability to improve its effectiveness significantly better than site survey. While for desktop survey with LDS, it has no significant difference with site survey (P-value is 0.803). It means desktop survey has ability to maintain its effectiveness same as site survey. Even for some indicators such as productivity and cost (desktop survey without LDS), it can improve its performance.
The result was also validated by applying desktop survey to another similar maintenance project and analysing using the same method. It was found that there is no significant difference on the effectiveness between the previous projects with the new similar project (P-value is 0.936). Hence it can be concluded that desktop survey utilizing 3D model is proven and can be used as an alternative way of working for development of piping work pack for offshore maintenance projects in lieu of conventional site survey.

Brunei aims to increase its renewable energy share to.200 MW by 2025, 600 MW by 2035, and 1200 MW by 2050. Despite the ambitious goals, the country only has less than
7 MW capacity to date. The country needs to consider all alternatives to boost renewable energy generation including the possibility of generation using residential rooftops for solar panels to achieve these targets. Indeed, the residential sector is the highest electricity consumer in the country with heavily subsidised electricity tariffs. Hence, this study aimed to explore the potential of implementing residential rooftop PV systems in terms of solar capacity and economics for users and the government, according to income and location factors. The study collected user data load consumption, analysed solar energy potential, and assessed residential rooftop availability. Four scenarios were identified to attract users, and economic analysis was conducted to assess feasibility. The average residential PV system sizes were projected nationwide, and total solar energy capacity was estimated, including potential government and user savings. The residential rooftop PV system sizes were estimated to be between 10.5 kW and 30.8 kW. The best implementation scenario results in a payback of 16.2 - 34.1 years, with a return on investment of -26.7% to 54.0%. Residential monthly savings range from BND 41 to BND 59 for 10.5 kW systems and BND 59 to BND 158 for 30.8 kW systems. If all households install PV systems, the government can save between BND 13 million and BND 30 million yearly on subsidies. The projected nationwide residential rooftop PV capacity ranges from 732 MW to 1536 MW, costing BND 973 million to BND 2046 million. The cost of electricity (COE) using this system is BND 1.33 per watt per watt. In comparison, the Tenaga Suria Brunei solar farm project with a capacity of 1.2 MW costs BND 20 million, resulting in a COE of BND 16.6 per watt. Hence, the residential rooftop PV system offers a 92% reduction in COE compared to conventional solar farms in Brunei.
The study suggests that Brunei should consider investing in residential rooftop PV systems due to their cost-effective benefits for both the government and users.

The idea of social entrepreneurship has recently captured the attention of numerous experts and policymakers globally. Among researchers, entrepreneurship stands out as a crucial area of investigation, evident in the increasing number of studies emphasizing the importance of global corporate education. Virtually all nations promote entrepreneurship as a means to stimulate economic development, create wealth, and generate employment. The research identifies a problem in Brunei Darussalam, pointing out a lack of knowledge about social entrepreneurship in the country, which could be seen as an opportunity for public benefit.
Consequently, the study aims to uncover and evaluate social entrepreneurial intentions while exploring the moderating impact of entrepreneurial education on these intentions. The study employs the Structured Equation Modeling (SEM) method, specifically Partial Least Square (PLS), to analyze the gathered information. Given the growing complexity of the research objective, the study opts for theoretical extensions of existing theories through exploratory research for theory development. This approach also allows flexibility in handling more intricate models, particularly testing the moderating relations. The methodology choice is justified due to the study's relatively small sample size (202 valid responses), for which Smart PLS 3 is utilize for analysis. The study's PLS-SEM analysis indicates that perceived behavioral control, attitude toward behavior, and subjective norms significantly predict social entrepreneurship intentions. However, the study observes no clear association between the goals of social enterprises and opinions regarding their desirability (empathy, moral obligation) or practicability (self-efficacy, social support). Acknowledging limitations, the study's sample frame includes only students, the unemployed, and self-employed individuals in Brunei Darussalam, constrained by time and resource limitations. Despite a comparable sample size to other studies, caution is advised in generalizing the findings to the entire country's population. In conclusion, the study advocates for more research on social entrepreneurship in Brunei Darussalam, emphasizing its relative obscurity in the local population. The investigation sheds light on various public perceptions of social entrepreneurship, encouraging additional research to enhance conceptual understanding and gain deeper insights.

, Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for Degree of Science (by Research) | ABSTRACT This research enhances solar photovoltaic (PV) system efficiency and reliability by integrating advanced machine learning models and adaptive solar tracking mechanisms. The study employs Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks, Extreme Learning Machines (ELM), and an ensemble approach for the precise forecasting of solar irradiance. An integration model combining the ensemble LSTM-ELM with Liu-Jordan and Badescu models was implemented to optimize solar panel tilt angles using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), leading to a closer alignment with actual solar data and enhancing energy capture. The proposed system utilizes a motor that adjusts the solar panel's tilt angle based on the monthly tilt angle derived from the integration model. This adjustment is performed once at the beginning of each month, after which the panels remain in the adjusted position to maximize energy capture for the rest of the month. Comprehensive testing across various environmental scenarios confirmed the system's robustness and reliability. The ensemble models demonstrated superior accuracy following thorough testing and optimization, achieving an MAE of 59.5, RMSE of 133.1, and an R2 value of 0.85, surpassing individual models. The model's predictions were validated against NASA data, revealing a significant improvement in accuracy over time. The precision tilt adjustment mechanism resulted in a 16.3% increase in energy output compared to a fixed system. These findings underscore the effectiveness of combining machine learning with optimization techniques to maximize solar power generation efficiency.

, Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science | ABSTRACT This thesis explores the integration of Internet of Things (loT) technology with Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) to enhance water quality monitoring, automation, and sustainability in aquaculture. The research aimed to develop a low-cost loT solution for precise water parameter monitoring, introduce automation to reduce power consumption, and create a sustainable RAS model. The primary research questions addressed were: (1) How effectively does loT technology enhance water quality monitoring and automation processes within a low-cost RAS, specifically for Giant Freshwater Prawn (FP) rearing? (2) How does the RAS contribute to sustainable water use, and how does automation support sustainability by reducing electrical consumption? The study objectives included developing an loT system for real-time water parameter monitoring and automation, investigating the effectiveness of RAS in FP rearing and water savings, and optimising farming methods by maintaining optimal water parameters. The methodologies of this study involved site visits to understand the context behind aquaculture in Brunei Darussalam, extensive desktop research, and hands-on experiments divided into two phases. Phase 1 assessed the mechanical and biological efficiency of the RAS. Phase 2 assessed the potential energy savings with the implementation of both loT and RAS, as well as any differences in water usage, water quality parameters, and FP growth. The results from Phase 1 indicated that the low-cost RAS effectively removed solids and maintained 100% biological efficiency. In Phase 2, automation reduced energy consumption by 41.79% without compromising water quality or GFP growth. The loT system provided reliable real-time monitoring and automation, ensuring optimal conditions and reducing operational costs. The findings suggest that loT and RAS technologies offer a viable solution for sustainable aquaculture, enhancing efficiency, sustainability, and precision in management. Future research should focus on scaling the low-cost RAS and optimising loT automation to improve sustainability and economic viability. This study presents significant benefits for farmers, hobbyists, and the Department of Fisheries by promoting sustainable practices, reducing operational costs, and supporting food security, making the low-cost RAS and loT solutions scalable for small-scale and large-scale aquaculture operations.

Nanocellulose is one of many promising materials that have garnered the attention of researchers and industries. In this study, cellulose nanofiber derived from sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) bagasse (SB-CNF) was employed as a reinforcing agent in the fabrication of nanocomposite-based films. The reinforcing effects of SB-CNF concentrations (varying from 10 to 40 wt. %) on the characteristics and functionalities of nanocomposite films were examined for the development of nanocomposite films. The results demonstrated that the film incorporating 30% SB-CNF into the SB matrix exhibited optimal characteristics and was chosen for further evaluation of its water barrier properties. To enhance the water barrier properties of resulting films, different
concentrations of lysozyme (0, 3.5, 7, 10.5, and 14 wt. %) were incorporated into the film matrix.
The addition of 3.5% LZ showed the best concentration for incorporation into SB/30%SB-CNF, as it exhibited superior hydrophobicity (97.60 + 0.79°) and mechanical properties (67.28 - 0.58 MPa), on account of its homogenous surface and strong intermolecular interactions between the lysozyme and SB/30%SB-CNF. For active packaging development, incorporation of Japanese yuzu (citrus junos) essential oil (YEO) into the SB/SB-CNF/3.5%LZ nanocomposite films decreased the film's hydrophobicity (<68.23 - 0.82°) and mechanical strength (<44.56 = 0.44
MPa) while increasing the elongation at break (>5.79 = 0.07%) and transparency (-89.00 + 0.58%)
of the films. An increase in water solubility (>22.70 = 0.75%), water vapour permeability >1.09
= 0.06 g mm/m' d kPa), and swelling ratio were also observed. These results affected the overall water barrier properties of the films containing YEO. On the contrary, there was a significant improvement in DPPH radical-scavenging activity, as the film reached an antioxidant level of 56.23 + 1.19% with the incorporation of 14% YEO. The application of the active nanocomposite films containing LZ and YEO on fresh chicken breast meat samples during frozen storage conditions revealed that the presence of 14% YEO within these films significantly contributed to safeguarding the chicken from spoilage. The resultant SB/SB-CNF-LZ/YEO films offered considerable promise for utilization in a number of active food packaging applications.

Equipment performance assessment or prediction has usually been derived using the conventional approach and heavily relies on expert opinion, where the methods used often vary from one person to another depending on the knowledge they possess. Many assets in the manufacturing industries are fitted with sensors on their equipment and this sensor could deliver values from both technical and business aspects. In this research work, a surface condenser was used as a case study to investigate machine learning methods that could be applied to the inline instrument data to predict the performance of the surface condenser and subsequently develop a cost-effective model for maintenance intervention decision-making. To date, most studies only focus on the technical improvement and prediction of specific technical parameters of surface condensers, and none of the research explores the holistic approach in attempting to link technical prediction to operating cost savings.
In this study, the excess consumption (steam, condensate and water) due to the surface condenser inefficiencies were predicted through the comparison of Deep Learning method, Multi-Layer Perceptron Regression method, Support Vector Regression method and Multivariate Time Series – LSTM method. The Multivariate Time Series -LSTM method responds well to one year training time span with MAPE of 25% compared to MAPE of 43% for four year training time span. The deep learning method was seen as the most promising method, with an average EVS score of 88% for the multi-output prediction of steam, condensate, and water compared to EVS score of 74% and 50% for NNMLPR and SVR respectively. Based on the outcome of the economics assessment in justifying the performance of the surface condenser predicted effectiveness from 0.37 to 0.68, about 4%, 7% and 17% cost savings can be realised from the removal of wastes from steam, condensate and cooling water which equates to a total of $3,014,513.36 based on the same production capacity and period of test data.

Municipal solid waste decomposition in landfills generates harmful landfill gases, notably methane, as a byproduct. This study demonstrates the use of various organic waste materials as biocover to mitigate these emissions. Given the limited research on the geotechnical and geoenvironmental aspects of biocovers, this study seeks to address this gap by evaluating different mixtures of biocover materials. Organic waste materials, including rice husk, crushed coconut coir, and compost, are mixed with 5% aerobic wastewater sludge and natural clay to create biocovers and tested to assess their geotechnical and geoenvironmental characteristics. Results indicate that the biocover materials outperform traditional clay covers in terms of organic content, liquid limit, compaction, permeability, and resistance to desiccation cracking. The most promising biocovers, such as 75CR (crushed coconut coir: wastewater sludge: clay in a ratio of 70:5:25), exhibit superior impermeability and meet ideal criteria for landfill cover performance. Geoenvironmental studies utilised four 30 cm×30 cm×86.5 cm bioreactors with varied biocover mixtures, conducted in simulated landfill conditions at the Petroleum and Chemical Engineering department, Universiti Teknologi Brunei. The study shows that biocovers enriched with methanotrophic bacteria effectively reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Comparative analysis with control (NCS) samples reveals significant reductions in methane production and cumulative CO2 equivalents emissions, particularly with the 75CR biocover, with its lowest cumulative CH4 production (28.9% less than NCS) and lowest cumulative CO2e emissions (24.7% less than NCS). However, potential limitations, such as the lack of analysis on the presence and activity of methanotrophic bacteria within the biocover-soil mixtures, were identified. Future studies should explore microbial kinetics to better understand the microbial dynamics within these biocovers. In conclusion, this study underscores the potential of biocovers in gas control and waste containment, with 75CR emerging as a promising option for mitigating methane emissions in landfills.

The transition of a student from adolescents to adulthood and entry into higher education institutions is characterized by emotional, psychological, and physical problems. The students' quality of life and life satisfaction is affected by the stressors that arise because of the transition. The purpose of this explanatory sequential mixed-method study was to determine the impact of self-leadership on quality of life (QoL) and life satisfaction, modifying the emotional and spiritual intelligence of students enrolled in higher learning institutions in Brunei. The bottom-up spill over theoretical model guided the study. Data
on self-leadership, quality of life, life satisfaction (n = 395) was collected during the
quantitative phase and analysed using regression analysis at a 0.05 significance level and structural equation model (SEM) on observed and latent variables. The data collection tools that were utilized in the study include the Revised Self-Leadership Questionnaire (RSLQ), Quality of Life Scale (QOLS), Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), and a Self-Prepared Interview Guide. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 26 was applied to perform descriptive and inferential statistics. The qualitative phase data (n =
32) included students' perception of the effect of emotional and spiritual intelligence on self-leadership, life satisfaction, and quality of life. Content/thematic analysis was performed using NVivo software. In phase one, it was identified that self-leadership had a significant influence on the students' quality of life and life satisfaction in higher education institutions. Notably, self-leadership had a larger variation in the student's quality of life as opposed to life satisfaction. The themes identified in the second phase were self-awareness, self-regulation, self-acceptance, help-seeking, holistic approaches, and achieving control. It was identified that the students possessed emotional and spiritual intelligence, which can be used to explain the positive relationship between self-leadership and the other two dependent variables of QoL and life satisfaction. The qualitative results supported the quantitative findings because it was identified that students applied varying emotional and spiritual intelligence approaches explaining the positive relationship of how having self-leadership promotes QoL and life satisfaction.
The findings support that improving students' self-leadership in higher learning
institutions can improve their QoL and life satisfaction. Self-leadership can enhance higher education students' overall wellbeing. The results contribute to the existing body of literature by supporting that self-leadership, moderated by emotional and spiritual intelligence is essential in improving higher education students' overall well-being.
Applying a mixed-methods approach supported in determining the impact of self-leadership on QoL and life-satisfaction, while also gaining an in-depth understanding on the influence of emotional and spiritual intelligence.

This research investigates the influence of self-efficacy as a moderating variable in the relationship between cognitive apprenticeship and the career development of I-ready trainees' in Brunei Darussalam. Drawing on cognitive apprenticeship theory and self-efficacy theory,
the study examines 189 trainees from diverse industries enrolled in the training program. While the findings do not support direct effects of cognitive apprenticeship on career development, they reveal that self-efficacy acts as a significant moderator. The study focuses the critical role of self-efficacy in enhancing career development within training programs, emphasizing theoretical, methodological, and practical implications. This research addresses the gap in understanding the moderating role of self-efficacy in the context of cognitive apprenticeship and highlights its importance for both theoretical understanding and practical application in supporting positive career outcomes.

The study aims to investigate factors affecting shrimp aquaculture production. The issue of low shrimp aquaculture production faced by a nation urgently needs to be studied as this issue may limit various economic opportunities. Moreover, the lack of comprehensive frameworks to explore this research area has led this study to investigate how entrepreneurial, organisational, and external factors would affect shrimp aquaculture production. Investigating these factors is crucial to provide comprehensive insights into the problems that previous studies failed to address. The study embedded the basis of a Resource-Based View and Dynamic Capabilities to provide an overall framework and strong underpinnings to understand the interaction of the discussed factors towards shrimp aquaculture production performance. A qualitative case study approach and semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 shrimp aquapreneurs and relevant government officers.
Thematic, within-case, and cross-case analyses were applied to identify and explain the research findings in detail. The study discovered two entrepreneurial factors (culture and ability to network), four organisational factors (shrimp production factors, research and development, human resources and species selection), and seven external factors
(government management, government assistance, customer acceptance, community
collaboration, supplier power, competitive rivalry and substitute products) that affect shrimp aquaculture production, which are discussed in detail in the thesis. This study contributes to the role of factors in shaping organisational performance, providing empirical evidence from the under-researched context of shrimp aquaculture production. The theses contributed to the existing body of knowledge, particularly to the Resource Base View and Dynamic Capabilities theories, by incorporating them into shrimp aquaculture production.
Likewise, the study offers several implications and suggestions to policymakers and practitioners in improving shrimp aquaculture production. A Bruneian model of the factors affecting shrimp aquaculture production is derived. Nevertheless, the limitations of this study include a small number of samples due to the difficulty of recruiting more research participants and the limited ability to transfer the research findings to other industries, such as agriculture and processing.

Brunei Darussalam is one of the world's developing countries albeit being small. The country faces sustainable challenges related to energy efficiency and environmental
quality. These issues can be tackled through the implementation of bioclimatic strategies into building design and construction. Green wall and roof in buildings aimed to reduce the indoor air temperature without excessive use of mechanical cooling systems. This thesis is aimed to investigate the effectiveness of this strategy in Brunei, comparing an enclosure retrofitted with green wall and roof with the one without under the same setting.
Results revealed that both green wall and roof showed significant reduction of indoor temperature during peak daytime periods. The green wall experiment has shown 3.5°C maximum indoor temperature reduction while green roof experiment has shown 5.4°C, both during peak daytime hours, showing maximum temperature decrease of 9.1% and 13% respectively.
The same experiment was conducted using simulation by Design builder showing 98.2% and 97.8% peak maximum indoor temperature match for green wall and roof respectively. The indoor temperature reduction was proved to be inadequate to reach optimum comfort for building occupants and to eliminate the use of air conditioners. The study suggested that green infrastructure alone cannot fully mitigate the use of mechanical cooling systems but still be able to reduce their usage. This led to energy savings and improved energy efficiency in buildings. Green wall and roof have the potential to enhance thermal comfort and biophilic benefits in buildings, creating more pleasant indoor environments for occupants. In general, the findings of these experiments emphasize the possibility of green wall and roof as a versatile answer for enhancing indoor spaces, advancing sustainability, and improving the well-being in buildings.
