, A thesis submitted to The Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science (MSc) in Mechanical Engineering | ABSTRACT

Corrugated plates are becoming increasingly used in light-weight load-bearing applications. The component's advantages include low density, ease of manufacture, and great mechanical strength. In this project, performance of corrugated plates under lateral loading was carried out using finite element analysis. Different core shapes such as trapezoidal, sinusoidal, triangular, square and cross were modelled using Ansys software. Quasi-static loading condition were applied on the corrugated plates. Aluminum, carbon/epoxy, jute/epoxy, and hybrid materials were considered as a material choice for the corrugated plates as well as different thickness of corrugation. Foam materials such as phenolic, polyurethane, graphite and polyvinylchloride were investigated. Statistical analyses Taguchi design was utilized performed to discuss the effects of different parameters considered such as corrugation shape, material, thickness, and foam insertion. Study parameters include maximum load and impact energy analysis that includes total energy absorption, specific energy absorption and crush force efficiency. Results indicated that corrugation shape had the most significant influence on the study parameters, followed by foam insertion, corrugation material and thickness. The foam insertion contributed to the increase in maximum load capacity, increase in total energy absorption by 69.76%, an increase of 66.04% in specific energy absorption and an increase of 50.5% in crush force efficiency.

As much as it is a challenge to use face recognition on Single Sample Per Person (SSPP), it is even a greater challenge when the single sample based face recognition is performed in an unconstrained environment. The unconstrained environment is normally considered as irregularities in facial expressions, pose, occlusion and illumination. This degree of difficulty increases due to the single sample and in the presence of occlusion and illumination. Extensive research has been done on face recognition under pose and expression changes. Comparatively, less research was reported on the occlusion and
illumination problems that occur in facial images. Occlusion may alter the appearance of face images and may cause deterioration in recognition. A robust method is required to handle the occlusion in the face image to improve the recognition performance. On the other hand, the illumination effects caused by poor lighting conditions in an unconstrained environment are known to considerably depreciate the performance of
otherwise capable face recognition systems. Thus, a robust pre-processing method is needed to deal with poor lighting and enhance the quality of images for face recognition.

The purpose of the proposed study is to implement an effective augmentation technique and image enhancement technique to enhance the performance of the SSPP face
recognition system in unconstrained environments. The proposed study first analyses the effect of classical augmentation techniques such as different geometric and photometric transformation methods. The virtual samples are created to expand the sample size to address the single sample problem. Then a local region-based technique is proposed to
deal with occlusion by creating virtual samples. To address the illumination in face images a probabilistic image enhancement has been adopted as a pre-processing approach. A deep neural network based FaceNet model is used to extract the features and support vector machine is used for classification. The performance of the proposed approaches is evaluated and exhibits superiority while handling occlusion and illumination over state-of-the-art counterparts.

Competency-based training (CBT) is the leading pattern for innovating technical and vocational education and training (TVET). Many studies have shown that attitude, knowledge/skills acquisition and teaching methods are important for students' success.
However, ineffective or inconsistent teaching methods may reduce the capacity of
students to internalize and demonstrate the competencies embedded in CBT curricula.
The assumption that competency development occurs naturally through structured content delivery fails to acknowledge the critical role of pedagogy. Similarly, Brunei's TVET graduates were also reported to lack technical skills and life skills. This study explores the implementation of CBT in a technical and vocational institute (TVI) in Brunei, focusing on teaching and learning practices and their impact on student performance. A quantitative research methodology was employed, and the study sample consists of 194 engineering students undergoing training at one of the schools in the TVI in Brunei. The purposive sampling method was used for the purpose of comprehensive sample representation. The structural equation modelling (SEM) results indicated that
technical skills (B = 0.425, p = 0.001) significantly influenced academic performance.
This suggests that students who perceived that they had acquired the required technical skills reported higher levels of academic achievement. In contrast, other predictors such
as attitude (B= -0.131, p=0.411), life skills (B= -0.201, p = 0.198), and teaching method
(B = 0.102, p = 0.527) did not exhibit significant effects on academic performance. The
interaction terms between teaching method and each of these variables were statistically insignificant, with p-values well above 0.05. Therefore, the teaching method does not act as a significant moderator in these relationships. For curriculum development, the model suggests that simply embedding technical and life skills into the curriculum is not sufficient if the instructional delivery is weak. Curriculum designers should therefore ensure that learning objectives are supported by instructional approaches that promote competency demonstration and application.

As a response to the substantial development interest in the growth potential of Temburong district in Brunei Darussalam, a proposal for an eco-town masterplan was formed to balance the development with the district's ecological role. The master plan is also in line with the national vision of Wawasan Brunei 2035 - a means to guide the sustainable development of the country.
This research argues that to achieve
sustainability, urban structures and functions must enable access to the means to live sustainably. The eco-city model emphasises the achievement of sustainability aims by enabling the community to make sustainable changes. This is achieved by focusing on the locality's character and demographic as the foundation of the sustainability strategy.
The planned development of Temburong includes a university campus integrated into residential and commercial areas.
Therefore, the study of established campus
communities within Brunei benefits the eco-town masterplan and Temburong's sustainable development. Furthermore, higher education institutions (HElS) act as a city on a smaller scale, enabling its role as a learning lab. The achievement of a sustainable campus could thus, inform the development of the wider community. This research looks into the application of the principles of the eco-city model on a local HEI to inform the adoption of the Temburong eco-town masterplan proposal for the achievement of Brunei's sustainability aims. A vital factor for the eco-city model and sustainable development is sustainable transport. It is the enabler of better participation and access to living improvements within the community. As such, this research aims to investigate the mobility challenges within the campus community and to give recommendations for a sustainable transport strategy to mitigate the issues and improve access and participation. By applying the capability approach as a theoretical framework, this research adopts the explanatory sequential mixed method design and utilised a questionnaire and interview for data collection. From the findings, three themes, four key issues and the attitudes towards sustainability within the campus community of Universiti Teknologi Brunei were determined. Additionally, by comparing results from different HEls, the research could determine how the characteristic of the institutions could affect the transport behaviour of the campus community. This adds further dimension in the formation of a sustainable transport strategy and improves understanding on the interaction of people with their space. Thus, by specifying the space to the needs of the people, it improved quality of life and participation in the community. Similarly, through increasing the quality of spaces, individuals are more supported in making sustainable changes. In this way, this research can inform the application of the eco-city model for Temburong to achieve sustainability and the goals of Wawasan Brunei 2035.
