Previous studies have fallen short of determining a comprehensive set of factors affecting the SMEs' decision to venture into the international arena, specifically within the Halal food industry where export engagement is reported to be low. Drawing on Dynamic Capabilities, Knowledge-Based View, and buttressed by Uppsala Model, this study aims to explore how the entrepreneurial, organisational, and external factors influence and hinder Bruneian Halal food processing SMEs to export. This qualitative study incorporates a case study approach and undertakes semi-structured interviews involving a total of eleven SMEs, consisting of four exporting SMEs and seven non-exporting SMEs. These SMEs were selected using purposive and snowball sampling techniques. In addition to documentary analysis, several government agencies were also interviewed to enrich the findings. Thematic analysis in the forms of within-case analysis and cross-case analysis were conducted and this study found that entrepreneurial factors influencing SME internationalisation include a willingness to take risks, possession of knowledge and experience, innovation, adaptability, commitment, and networking abilities. Conversely, lack of creativity and competitiveness, risk aversion, and negative mind-sets, pose as hindering entrepreneurial factors. This study further revealed that organisational factors influencing SME internationalisation include access to adequate production and financial resources, high production capacity, effective marketing efforts, as well as availability of innovative and internationally Halal-certified products, in contrast to limited resources, low production capacity, and unsuitable product offerings, as hindering organisational factors. For the external factors, this study affirmed foreign intermediaries as influential factors and identified the role of local government assistance as both influencing and hindering elements in SME internationalisation. Additionally, challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and blaming culture further emerged as significant external factors affecting both exporting and non-exporting SMEs, exacerbating the process of SME internationalisation. This study contributes valuable insights to the body of knowledge in the under-researched fields of internationalisation and Halal spheres within the SME context. It also offers practical implications and recommendations for the practitioners and policymakers aimed at advancing the country's goal of internationalisation, which serves as a pivotal step towards economic diversification. One limitation of this study is the participation of only a small sample size as some Bruneian SMEs declined to participate.
Consequently, this may affect the analytical generasibility of the findings.

A regular basis of vegetable consumption is vital for a healthy diet and prevention of non-communicable diseases as they are packed with various nutrients such as fibre, vitamins, minerals and more. Hence, the objective of this study is to formulate a convenient and novel food product with high nutrient value from local vegetables commonly found in Brunei Darussalam suitable for current health-conscious trend in the market. In this study, nine vegetable paper samples were formulated consisting of red spinach with no binding agent (BN), red spinach sago (BS), red spinach okra (BO), eggplant with no binding agent (EN), eggplant sago (ES), eggplant okra (EO), moringa with no binding agent (MN), moringa sago (MS) and moringa okra (MO). The samples were analysed for their proximate content, physicochemical content, antimicrobial and shelf-life of the local vegetables and vegetable papers were analysed. In addition, several antioxidant activity assays were conducted for the local vegetable and vegetable paper samples as well which includes DPPH, ABTS, Total Phenolic Content (TPC), Total Flavonoid Content (TFdC) and Total TFC Content (TFC). The cytotoxicity of the samples was measured against PANC-1, HT-29 cells and in brine shrimp lethality assay. Furthermore, a texture profile analysis was conducted to measure parameters such as hardness, cohesiveness, springiness, chewiness, gumminess. A sensory analysis consisting of thirty participants was conducted to assess the samples based on attributes such as appearance, flavour, aroma, texture, mouthfeel and overall acceptability. Results have shown that the moisture, protein, fat, ash, carbohydrate and dietary fibre content of the vegetable papers ranges from 21.13+0.18% to 89.00t0.12%, 0.87+0.03% to 5.31=0.06%, 0.4610.02% to 2.22+0.40%, 0.27=0.19% to 16.84+0.21, 5.47=0.34% to 57.8610.52% and 2.73=0.48% to 5.91+0.24%, respectively. Moringa sago (MS) vegetable paper revealed the highest antioxidant activity value in DPPH (56.6910.93 4g AAE/ gdw, TPC (3902.03+5.75 #g GAE/g dw) and slightly higher selectivity towards glucose-starved condition against PANC1 pancreatic cell line with cell viability value of 95.93+2.49% in high glucose condition and 79.84+3.41% in no glucose condition. In addition, red spinach with sago (BS) vegetable paper has the highest antioxidant value in ABTS+ (15506.52+71.44 4g Trolox/ g dw) and TFdC (106.3010.24 mg QE ug/g dw). The brine shrimp toxicity value ranges from low to moderate, with LCso from 39.92+4.39 ug/mL to 249.20‡39.26 ug/mL. The sensory acceptance rate of the product ranges from 2.79+0.96 to 3.31=1.05, which shows a medium acceptance rate. Overall, the vegetable paper samples show great potential for a novel food product, as further improvement and research would enhance the quality, taste and acceptance of the product itself.

Understanding the dynamics of carbon dioxide emissions, and agricultural exports, local revenue, capital expenditure is crucial for modeling economic growth and implementing effective policies in Southeast Asian countries, particularly Indonesia. This thesis provides important insights for economic modeling and policy planning by employing econometric models to investigate interdependencies and regional economic disparities. Specifically, it explores the contribution of local revenue and capital expenditure to regional economic growth in Indonesia by highlighting significant linkages across provinces. To ensure the robustness of the results, various econometric techniques, such as panel unit root tests and cross-sectional dependence tests are employed. The findings reveal that both local revenue and capital expenditure significantly drive economic development, with growth in one region positively influencing neighboring regions.
The thesis also evaluates the positive impact of carbon dioxide emissions on agricultural production in Southeast Asia. The results suggest that, within certain thresholds, increased carbon dioxide levels can enhance agricultural productivity, bearing implications for both environmental and agricultural policies. Additionally, the study confirms the substantial contribution of agricultural exports to both agricultural and overall economic growth in Southeast Asian countries. These findings underscore the importance of improving agricultural export performance through enhanced governance, infrastructure development, and strategic land management.
Overall, this thesis offers valuable insights for policymakers, indicating that targeted fiscal policies, environmental regulations, and support for agricultural exports are essential for fostering balanced and sustainable economic growth in Southeast Asia. The comprehensive analysis of these dynamics, combined with the use of robust econometric methods, contributes meaningfully to the existing literature on regional economic development and agricultural economics, thereby enhancing the accuracy of economic modeling.

Soil acidity is a widespread constraint across both temperate and tropical regions, which poses significant challenges to sustainable crop production due to excess H* concentration, nutrient depletion, and toxicity from heavy metals/metalloids. Addressing this issue is crucial for reclaiming and revitalising acidic soil for agricultural use. Among various approaches, the application of plant residues — such as crop straw and fresh plant material — offers a sustainable and resource-efficient strategy in repurposing agricultural and underutilized plant biomass for soil acidity management. The present thesis comprises four research chapters, which integrate a global meta-analysis and a series of controlled laboratory incubation experiments, exploring the potential of plant residue and the derived biochar to improve the chemical properties of acidic soil.
In the first phase of the research, a meta-analysis of published literature was conducted to quantify the effect of plant residue incorporation on acid soil pH. This analysis established a consensus that plant residue significantly increases soil pH, with the strongest liming effect observed in extremely acidic soil (pH 3.5 - 4.4) compared to moderately or slightly acidic soil (pH > 5.5). Importantly, the study identified, for the first time, critical thresholds for plant alkalinity (≥ 80 cmol kg") and plant total nitrogen (N; ≥ 10 g kg ) to achieve optimal pH improvement.
Building on the insights from the meta-analysis, the second phase of the research focused on a particularly challenging subtype of acid soil —acid sulfate soil. The soil, sampled from a rice field in Brunei Darussalam, was independently amended with plant residues of Melastoma malabathricum and Dicranopteris linearis, with dolomite serving as a comparison and unamended soil as a control. While both plant residues led to significant improvements in soil properties, the effects were modest and insufficient to alleviate the soil chemical constraints, particularly when compared to dolomite treatment. This suggests that the plant resides are not viable stand-alone amendments for acid sulfate soil.
The subsequent experiment built upon the preceding laboratory investigation and explored the combined applications of dolomite with both plant residues and their derived biochar products for a more effective outcome. Biochar was produced by subjecting the plant resides to thermal decomposition in a laboratory muffle furnace at 300, 500, and 700 °C for 2h. The findings revealed greater improvements in soil chemical properties from the combined application of dolomite with biochar compared to dolomite-only treatment and dolomite-plant residue combination. Moreover, the study also found previously undocumented antagonistic interactions between dolomite and biochar in enhancing soil exchangeable magnesium (Mg) and available N. These findings suggest potential trade-offs in soil properties that must be considered, which could have practical implications in selecting appropriate amendment combinations for specific soil improvement objectives.
The final phase of the research evaluated the effect of wheat straw-derived biochar on the chemical properties of slightly acidic soil from Canada. This investigation specifically examined the influence of pyrolysis conditions - pyrolysis temperatures (350, 500, and 650°C) and retention times (1 and 2h) - as well as application rates (5 and 10 t ha) and placement methods (thorough mixing vs. surface broadcasting) of wheat straw biochar. Biochar addition notably increased soil available phosphorus (P) and potassium (K), with the magnitude of these effects varying based on pyrolysis conditions and application rates. Intriguingly, surface broadcasting of wheat straw biochar resulted in greater soil N availability compared to thorough mixing, highlighting the significance of placement method in influencing soil N dynamics.
Collectively, the findings of this thesis advance the understanding of the interplay between plant-based amendments and acid soil properties. The results provide a strong foundation and proof-of-concept for identifying promising strategies and recognizing the limitations of certain treatments.
These insights are also crucial for refining future soil amendment practices and developing context-specific, field-applicable solutions for managing the fertility and productivity of acid soil.

The need for a sustainable curriculum that equips learners with key competencies and transversal skills has become crucial in the competency-driven society today. In graphic design education, the curriculum should not only train students with the fundamentals of theoretical and practical skills but also align with industry needs to prepare graphic designers for increasingly complex roles.
However, existing studies found various issues of graphic design education and its curriculum such as curriculum structure issues, outdated material and conventional approaches and insufficient sustainable integration highlighting the need to investigate and re-evaluate existing curricula to ensure its effectiveness in cultivating transversal skills required by modern graphic designers.
In Brunei Darussalam, the graphic design education has yet to be formally studied and it is unknown how graphic design curricula are conducted and how effective they are. In this research, the graphic design micro-curriculum in Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) was studied as a representative case with the aim to discover findings reconstituting curriculum components towards a proposed sustainable framework for graphic design that prepares learners with transversal skills for a sustainable future.
Through an exploratory lens of VARK Learning theory, the study utilised mixed-methods approach and triangulation to evaluate the micro-curriculum. Quantitative researcher-designed VARK questionnaire, qualitative classroom observation and focus group sessions were used to evaluate the micro-curriculum curriculum components' capacity in establishing the required skills, teaching and learning alignment and understanding learner feedback.
Findings revealed that despite the reliance on conventional approaches, the curriculum and its components were found effective to foster the required competences and transversal skills in graphic design students. Findings of this research demonstrate that a competent curriculum is a holistic integration of curriculum components rather than revolutionary approaches. Distinctive curriculum components were found to facilitate sustainable graphic design learning and the employment of VARK in this research also demonstrated its relevance and success in broader applicability beyond its original purpose in a rapidly changing society.
