Pyrolysis is the conversion of ligno-cellulosic biomass to bio-fuel. Bio-fuel extracted is divided into three categories, bio-oil, bio-char and non-condensable gas. In this research, Napier grass and Laila paddy rice husk were collected locally, processed, dried and pyrolysed in an inert condition with nitrogen gas with flow rate of 10L/min and running time of 45 minutes. An existing biomass pyrolysis unit has been designed and tested where the system includes a fixed bed reactor connected to a parallel flow pipe design condenser for direct heat exchange. The first improvement include a combination of gas heating and biomass heating were used. Local sawdust was used as heating source for the heating system and Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) for the gas heating system with a weight ratio of 6:1. Coarse and fine sawdust were used as the biomass heating source with weight ratio of 3:1. Second and third improvements that has been added to the system were a cyclone of 7 cm body diameter according to its optimal dimension ratios, and glass fiber insulation inside the burner that act as a reactor shield. The first part of the study is to determine the influence of pyrolysis temperature (250°C, 350°C, 450°C and 550°C) for the particle size of 0.85 millimeter and the second part of the study is to determine the influence of biomass particle size (0.85 mm, 1 mm and 2mm) under constant temperature of 550°C, and finally, the products were analyzed for their physical and chemical properties. The apparent vapor residence time was estimated at 5 seconds. A maximum of Napier grass bio-oil of 33% by weight dry biomass feedstock was obtained at 550 °C, with heating value of 16.1 MJ/kg and pH of 3.49. The bio-char, at 550 °C, has 40 wt.% product yield, with energy density of 20.5 GJ/m and heating value 35.2 MJ/kg. For rice husk, maximum of 24% by weight dry biomass feedstock was obtained at 550°C, with heating value of 18.6 MJ/kg, and pH of 3.04. The bio-char has 27 wt. % product yield, with energy density of 1.65 GJ/m and heating value 19.1 MJ/kg.
Maximum products have 0.85mm particle sizes.

The design process of structural planning and design requires not only imagination and theoretical thinking but also a comprehensive knowledge of science of structural engineering besides the knowledge of hands-on aspects such as designing using the recent and current standards. The purpose of the standards is to guarantee and enhance
safety, keeping careful balance between economy and safety. For this stadium project study, some of the structural elements (slabs, beams, columns, foundation) are designed using a software known as Autodesk Robot Structural Analysis 2016. In order to design, plan of the structure need to be planned. Thereby depending on the fittingness, plan layout of the beams and the positions of columns can be fixed. Then, the loads are applied, where dead load are of self-weight of the structure itself and live loads taken from BS6399-1 code. Safe bearing capacity of soil is assumed as 300MPa and footings are designed based on safe bearing capacity of soil. For designing the beams and columns, it is necessary to know the bending moments that they are subjected to. While for design of slab depends on its end conditions and loadings whether to design it one-way or two-way. Structure also simulated under wind loading of 30 meter per second.

This research investigated the extent of practice of passive design in Brunei Darussalam, especially after the introduction of Green Building Code in 2015. While many countries have their own code of practices to achieve energy efficiency in buildings as well as conservation approaches for water and resources, the same code cannot be used without considering one's country climates, traditions and cultures. This is mainly because construction industry in Brunei Darussalam is dominated by public spending and the adoption of climate-responsive buildings is still a new concept. Literature reviews were carried out to understand the different approaches of climate-responsive buildings for different climates around the world and how it may benefit the energy consumptions. Interviews were done among field practitioners to investigate to what extent passive design has being practiced and case studies were carried out to obtain confirmations of designs. It was proven that no matter a practitioner is aware of the building code or not, they would still practice passive designs in their projects. Additionally, no matter which sector a practitioner is involved, he/she would implement passive design during the design stage. In contrast, it was observed that having different job scopes would result in difference in practice approach. However, due to the limited respondents for the interview, it is inappropriate to use such statistics to conclude for the whole design populations in Brunei.

Hence, with the help of case studies, it can be concluded that Brunei has enormous space for such design approach in near future either for public or private projects without making the Green Building Code mandatory. | Thesis is also available in CD and is not for loan or reference use.
