submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science Abstract

Numerous studies have been conducted on different aspects revolving around the design of Cyclone Separator for its prospective in the oil and gas industry. One of the prospective that typically remained unexploited or neglected is utilising it as a Production Separator in the place of conventional bulky Horizontal Gravity Separators in a Surface Production Facility. Cyclone Separators perform gas-liquid phase separation via centrifugal force and gravitational force, whereas Gravity Separators only depend on gravitational force. This fundamentally leads to their differences in bulk dimensions. However, we could not disregard the fact that Gravity Separators have reached their maturity in design and, on numerous occasions, would be the preferred method adopted in performing phase separation. Nevertheless, Cyclone Separators are still in their developing stage, limiting the potential to "over throne" Gravity Separators. One of the reasons is the lack of data or proof that supports Cyclone Separators' ability to cater to various operating conditions similar to Horizontal Gravity Production Separators. With that in mind, this thesis has reviewed key design aspects/parameters of the Cyclone Separator that have been investigated by several researchers, and devised an optimum design combination to materialise the idea of implementing a Cyclone Separator as a Production Separator in a Surface Production Facility. Furthermore, the review was further endorsed with Computational Fluid Dynamic Simulation and Process Dynamic Simulation evaluated in ANSYS® FLUENT R20 and UniSim® Design Suite R460, respectively.
