General note ABSTRACT<br/>In this project lateral loading has been performed on foam filled bi-tubular composite tubes. Hand lay-up method is used to fabricate the Jute, glass and jute-glass/epoxy bi-tubes. Polyurethane is used as the foam filler for the bi-tubes. The inner and outer tubes tube diameters were of 55 mm and 110 mm respectively. The length of 200 mm is maintained for all the fabricated tubes. Single tubes having diameters similar to the inner and outer tubes diameters were fabricated and subjected to lateral loading for comparison purpose. Lateral load-displacement relations are drawn and the energy absorption is calculated. Crush force efficiency and stroke efficiency were determined and discussed. Effect of material used on the ultimate load and the specific energy absorption is compared. Crashworthiness analysis was made on the laterally crushed bi-tubes based on the crush force efficiency, stroke efficiency and the absorbed energy results. Failure mode of the crushed bi-tubes identified and discussed.<br/>Results show that the glass-fibre/ epoxy bi-tubes supported load higher 32.5% and 16% than the jute-glass and jute-epoxy specimens respectively. The glass-fibre/epoxy bi-tubes supported load of 54% and 37.5% higher than the individual of the maximum loads obtained from the empty inner and outer tubes. The percentage differences for the jute-glass and jute/epoxy tubes were 32% and 59.6% respectively. It has been found that, the glass/ epoxy bi-tubes absorbed energy higher 74.2% and 72.1% than the jute-glass and jute-eроху specimens respectively. Two longitudinal cracks were observed on the laterally loaded bi-tubes, at the top and bottom of the surfaces of the crushed specimens. With the progress in the crush distance, another two longitudinal cracks were observed at both sides of the specimen. Delamination is also observed on the crushed specimens.
