General note ABSTRACT

This report presents the analysis of stress intensity factor of surface crack at a circumferential grooved solid cylinder. One of the major causes of deterioration in the engineering components and structure is fatigue fracture that could lead to failure. Therefore, to ensure sustainability of the operation the stress intensity factor shall be assessed to avoid any problems during operation. ANSYS software was utilized in evaluating the Stress Intensity Factor. The key points are then collected and converted into Microsoft Excel sheets for easier representation. Validation of the normalized Stress Intensity Factor results were compared between the experimental data and the results obtained from ANSYS. A total of 189 simulations were carried out using the ANSYS application. From the results, the results showed good correlation with the experimental results. It was found that r/d is indirectly proportional to the SIF value, increasing D/d ratio will increase the SIF value to the model, different a/c will gives you different trend line due to the differences in the length of surface crack and finally a/d ratio shows the crack depth of the surface crack which is proportional to the length of the surface crack. SIF value is the highest when D/d is 2.0 with a value of 2300 MPa whereas when D/d is 1.5 the SIF value is almost half 1100MPa. The larger the ratio of D/d the higher the stress concentration around the surface crack region. In conclusion, the simulation result had good relationship with the experimental results and the effects of various parameters were determined.
