General note Abstract

Over the years, industrial incidents especially downstream industries still occur around the world despite the improvements in process safety management (PSM). It was identified that numerous incidents were initiated due to the lack of technical competencies and inadequate knowledge on process safety (PS). Moreover, the advancement of industrial technology concurrently intensifies the PS complexity. Therefore, personnel's proficiency is an essential requirement in the organisation to produce and maintain a good PS system. Chemical engineering (CE) graduates play an important role in this area. Therefore, performing an investigation on their PS knowledge gap is essential. The study begins with analysing PS education implemented in undergraduate CE programmes to determine the common PS topics. Referring to the identified common PS topics and 20 PSM elements of Energy Institute on High-Level Framework, their importance for employed fresh graduates' involvement in industries are being studied via survey questionnaires. Graduates' competency on these PS topics and PSM elements are also verified via survey questionnaires. Among the 12 common PS topics found implemented in the undergraduate CE programme and 20 PSM elements, the clarified essential PS topics and PSM elements indicate the industry's prioritisation for graduates' competency in the management of accident prevention and mitigation. Overall findings imply majority of graduates' PS knowledge gaps are caused by the lack of students' industrial exposure for PS education. Methods to bridge graduates' PS knowledge gaps are discussed and it was determined thatthe ideal supplementary approach to aid PS knowledge development isan interative non-immersive PS game. The game aims to expose students to the complex industrial environment and provides the students with the opportunity to experience the and role and responsibilities of a chemical engineer in the PS field. This game approach is deemed to be beneficial for both university and industry especially in the era of Industry 4.0.
