500 ## - GENERAL NOTE
General note ABSTRACT<br/>X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy has been widely used to determine the elemental composition in material and various applications in different fields such as in geological application and mining. In this paper, the XRF will be used to detect corrosion by determine the percentage of each element present in the materials. The equipment used for this research is called as XRF spectrometers or XRF alloy analyser. It can be miniaturised to portable devices to ease engineers to perform corrosion test in any situation and the price is now affordable which allows industries and universities to expose this kind of equipment to the students and workers at early stage. One big advantages with the handheld XRF spectroscopy is that the engineers have the ability to carry out in-situ measurements on the materials where no preparations are needed to get the results required making it popular among corrosion engineers. For this research, it is divided into two main stages. The first stage of this research is to corrode the Aluminium alloy by immersing it to strong acid (HCL) and alkaline (NaOH). After that, by using the XRF alloy analyser, different type of elements exist in the aluminium alloy will be determine as every elements have different energy and intensity. The work piece of each aluminium alloy is divided into 4 sets of data point which will be discussed further in Chapter 3. The second stage of this research is to validate on the accuracy of the results obtained from XRF Spectroscopy by comparing it with other corrosion measurement techniques which is linear polarization resistance (LPR) techniques. This is where the corrosion rate of the work piece will be measured to validate whether XRF can be used to detect early stages of corrosion or not through the decreasing of the element content in Aluminium Alloy.
