Summary, etc. This text has been conceived, written, and produced with a keen awareness of its audience: undergraduate college and university students beginning the study of sociology. One of the greatest challenges in writing an introductory text is addressing the diversity of students enrolled in this course. Indeed, this is a diversity I know first-hand, having taught for almost twenty years in a wide range of academic settings, including large universi-ties, small private colleges, community colleges, and even a prison and a police academy. A text that acknowl-ediges the great diversity of the academic community is not only attractive to the various segments, but is richer for them all because it truly represents the diversity of North American society.<br/>Most sociologists would probably agree that there is little in the discipline that is inherently beyond the understanding of any undergraduate student. At the same time, how material is presented— in terms of explanation and example-is crucial in an introductory text. I have labored to present the discipline comprehensively and clearly, so that students of all ages, social backgrounds, and career interests can share the vital insights and excitement of sociology.
