Any well-designed building must be successful on three levels: in relation to user needs, in relation to other buildings, and in terms of inherent design and construction principles. The architect faces the daunting task of applying sensible design criteria to create a building that resolves often conflicting user and environmental objectives, within the given constraints of current engineering and construction technology. Often, particularly in recent modern archi-tecture, these goals do not mesh: design elements are applied inappropriately, without regard to their original intent or function, resulting in buildings that are unsuccessful at any level.<br/>Idea, Form, and Architecture, drawing on architectural traditions from Vitruvius to Le Corbusier, proposes a set of theoretical architectural principles that can be practically applied to contemporary buildings.
