A project report submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Foundation Degree in Mechanical Engineering
ABSTRACT
This report is prepared in conjunction with the requirements for Foundation Degree Mechanical Engineering final-year design project in which the title of the project is "Design and Fabrication of Bicycle with Flywheel".
Flywheel is a rotating mechanical device with a significant moment of inertia used to stores kinetic energy. It provides continuous energy in which the amount of energy stored proportional to the square of its rotational speed. When torque is applied, the rotational speed will increase and hence its stored energy. Conversely, the rotational speed will decrease by applying torque to a mechanical load thereby flywheel releases stored energy.
The flywheel will be added to a bicycle and this would help increase the efficiency of the bicycle. The flywheel can temporarily store the kinetic energy from the bicycle when the cyclist needs to slow down. The energy stored in the flywheel can be used to bring the cyclist back up to cruising speed. Flywheel can also work in almost any climate, and are very quick to get up to speed. Moreover, it last longer.
Flywheel bicycle would actually be an advantage not only to a cyclist who wants to enjoy riding; it would also advantage the students or workers at site in a way that it can reduce the parking issues and might also save the budget as bicycle does not use petrol or any electrical equipment in order for it to work. In addition, flywheel bicycle is a pollution-free method of storing energy as they are environmentally friendly (produce no carbon emissions and contain no hazardous chemicals).
In general, this will solely focus on understanding the concepts of how the flywheel stores its energy and increase the moment of inertia and efficiency of the bicycle.
