Abstract

Plastic honeycomb core sandwiched between polymer-fibreglass sheets composite are well known in its vast application in engineering field. Its popularity depends upon the properties of the material itself such as low density, lightweight, flexibility with high strength and its high stiffness. Some of the famous applications are aeronautical structures, high speed marine craft, racing cars and transportations, medical exterior prosthetics and building structures. In Brunei, most of the new buildings were using this type of materials as one of the major parts of the construction. Brunei have a lot of numbers of mosque built over its land, one of the typical application of the material stated previously is the mosque dome. In this project, the main aim is to investigate the effect of varying the parameters of the material used and suitability of bio-based material in this type of specimen. In addition, the novelty of this project lies on the test samples which is using 3D printed polylactic acid (PLA) core. In the end, the outcome of the project should be able to contribute to material engineering field as the study is focusing on investigating the mechanical properties of the honeycomb core sandwich composite structure.
