Abstract
There is a huge opportunity in Brunei to produce solar energy from its huge amount of sunshine with yearly average irradiance of 1500-2000 kWh/m². In Brunei, fossil fuels generated power plants are being used as a major source of energy which is of grid-based electrification and only 0.05 percent was generated using renewable energy options of solar power plant. This thesis will present the results of socio-technical study and design of off-grid solar electrification system for Brunei residence. The study includes the types of Photovoltaic (PV) system, the basic principle of the PV system as well as the parameters and specifications to design such system. This report was based on an extensive document analysis which focuses on the technical, financial, and sustainability of implementing specifically an off-grid solar electrification system in Brunei. Surveys were conducted to find out the social acceptance of imposing the system and results from the survey are used to create an optimum design of the solar system. The hypothesis for this thesis is that with the implementation of an off-grid solar electrification system, it would benefit Brunei's economy and its environment by reducing the usage of fossil fuels and also reducing the total emissions of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
