ABSTRACT
Experimental work on hybrid and non-hybrid composite tubes subjected to lateral loading has been carried out. Jute/epoxy, glass/epoxy and hybrid jute-glass/epoxy materials were examined. Tube length and inner diameter of 200 mm and 110 mm respectively were used. Hand lay-up method was used to fabricate the composite tubes. Effect of material used and number of layers on lateral-load-displacement relations and on the energy absorption were investigated. Lateral Load-displacement relations were drawn and discussed. Results show that the maximum lateral load obtained for glass/epoxy is found 23.6% higher than hybrid jute-glass/epoxy and 75.5% higher than jute/epoxy. Crashworthiness analysis has been made on the laterally crushed composite tubes where the crush force efficiency and stroke efficiency were calculated. It has been found that the specific energy absorption of the glass/epoxy tubes is found higher respectively 29.6% and 48.4% than hybrid jute-glass/epoxy and jute/epoxy tubes. The increase in the number of layers from two to six increases the maximum lateral load respectively 74.3% and 73.1% for the glass/epoxy and jute/epoxy composite tubes. Failure mechanisms of the laterally loaded composite tubes were also discussed.
