KW - ram N1 - A Final Year Project submitted to The Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Business (HONS) in Finance and Risk Management; ABSTRACT The population of Brunei has been growing dramatically due to high birthrate in recent years that leads to current female population about 49.5 percent and better use of female population could increase the economic growth and may help ensure the sustainable development in a country. Brunei has been trying to encourage their female population to join labour force especially in public and private sector from middle to upper management. The purpose of this report is to identify and study an equal opportunities for women and men in the workforce including women in public and private sector especially Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Brunei Darussalam particularly in the higher position and explore the background factors and ways on how to increase representation of women in leadership roles. In addition, the research also intends to explore the challenges and constraints faced by the women while trying to get to the leadership level. In order to examine the situation in Brunei Darussalam, 50 to 95 respondents are targeted to participate in online survey and 3 respondents from Small Medium Enterprises were interviewed. The data and information that is used in this report are completely based on primary and secondary data in Human Resource Management and Management studies that are related to the subject. The information was gathered through the annual reports such as International Labour Organisation (ILO), previous articles, journals, and researches. The findings of this research did not fully support that the lack of women in leadership position in Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) yet in public sector, there is still underrepresentation of women in leadership or higher position. However, balancing work and family life had a bigger impact on the respondents.
