A project report submitted in partial fufillment of the managements for the degree of the Foundation Degree in Mechanical Engineering. ABSTRACT

This research deals with existing designs. Taking the components, joints and mechanism and creating a totally new type of foldable bicycle that fits their primary criterias which is portability and compactness. A study of the advantages and disadvantages of these components, joints and mechanisms are discussed here.

These advantages and disadvantages are done by taking into account Brunei's terrain and the locals.

Gathering research data on bicycles and foldable bicycles yielded some results that might be helpful in the design of the foldable bicycle. These result are mostly added here and their advantages and disadvantages discussed. Some concept designs are created which contains rough sketches of the prototypes.

Material research data considering its properties and availability are also noted here that will help in considering the final product.

Research progress has been listed, and the final concept design has been drawn and converted into 3D with the computer software Autodesk Inventor. Calculations can be done through the software mentioned above alongside simulation and analysis for the bike.

With a safety factor of 2.75, the analysis shows that the team's design is safe. This is very important, since safety is very much a crucial factor for any design of a new project. The project team have designed a simple way to fold the bike & decided to use magnetic component to hold the bike in its folded form.
