A project report submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Foundation Degree in Mechanical Engineering. ABSTRACT
Flat-plate solar collector is one of the main types of solar collector. Flat-plate collector is also one of the simplest and cheapest type to build. Moreover, flat-plate solar collector benefits to those live in hot climate as it will maximize the use of the hours of daylight in a day. In Brunei Darussalam where the daylight can reach up to 10 hours, flat-plate solar collector for hot water is possible.
Flat-plate solar collector works by converting the radiation of the sun to heat to be transferred to the flowing water in the flow tubes. The main component of the flat-plate solar collector is the collector. The collector consists of flow passage, absorber plate, glass cover, insulator and an enclosure.
Designing of the collector initially was done based on the findings from different studies and the calculations made. After surveying of materials, further final designs are carried out to adjust the materials for sale in the market. Then, the Flat Plate Solar Liquid Collector was fabricated and continued with assembling and testing which was carried out at the workshop of Mechanical Engineering Department, Institute Technology Brunei. The estimated cost of the set up is also recorded.
