Ineffectiveness can result in great delays to projects, and huge impact on allocated budget. To the government, unsuccessful projects had caused loss and hindered the effort towards achieving the desired development targets outlined in the National Development Plan (NDP). This research aims to identify the impact of project manager competencies on project success and employee work motivation, and to be a pioneer study on understanding successful leaders and managers in Brunei Darussalam cultural context. The study will look into a local engineering organisation as a case study. Surveys have been designed based on global context and modified to ensure practicality to Brunei Darussalam context. Project managers were asked to rate project success measures based on their relevance or significance in their years of working experience, while their subordinates were asked to rate the project managers on their behavioural competences, i.e. soft skills, and their own work motivation. The data collected were gathered and analysed using SPSS. It was discovered that project manager competencies have positive correlation to both project success and employee work motivation. The project success measures or factors were also tabulated and ranked according to relevance and significance. The main limitation of this research is the number of project managers are very limited in this organisation and the organisation itself only deal with very limited types of projects. Future research is recommended to be made on different organisations with varying business nature in Brunei, both private and public, to get much stronger data on the different types of projects there are. That way the results should more accurately represent in Brunei Darussalam context ER -
