The episode has caused severe health problem to the young and old population of the country, not only that it has negatively affect Brunei economy especially tourism industry. The aim of this project is to determine the effectiveness and feasibility of various application layer protocols (MQTT, REST and CoAP) and wireless standard technology (WiFi and LoRa) and evaluate the performance based on the conditions in the context of forest fire warning and detection system environment. To the best of our knowledge this is the first study that provide performance evaluation comparison among the protocols in LoRa or WiFi networks in real world applications. Furthermore, a prototype is developed and further in-depth analysis on four different criteria including power consumption, over the air time, successful transmission and relative signal strength indicator (RSSI) are performed to gain insight into their strength and weaknesses. Based on the experiments the prototype that is based on LoRa can reach 600 meters compare to 120 meters in WiFi. Prototype based on LoRa and CoAP also perform much better in term of voltage consumption, delay time and success rate; Thesis is also available in CD and is not for loan or reference use ER -
