ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to determine whether residential area have an impact on micro business and help potential entrepreneurs determined their strategic direction when starting a business. Depending on the result of the research, whether it will produce positive or negative impact, potential micro business owners will have a reference that will influence the outline of their strategic direction in terms of location factor. This study further investigates the extent to which location (residential area) have an influence on the performance of these micro business. The significant drop in oil prices in 2014 has exposed the country's structural weakness and lack of diverse economy and resources. Therefore since 2015 on onwards, Brunei Darussalam has been implementing policy to improve the economic conditions. Hence, in 2019, the policy focus shifted to Strengthening local small and medium enterprises. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have the potential to contribute to the diversification of the country's economy. (OECD 2019). The Brunei government recognise the importance of SME's in diversifying the economy and reducing the dependence in fossil fuel industry and generate jobs through the growth of SME's in the country.

The research strategy being employed in this study is both qualitative and quantitative approach. In this study the quantitative data will be obtained from survey questionnaire from customers of the micro business. Whereas the qualitative data is gathered from the interviews of the micro-business owners who operate in the location of study. A case study survey research design was used in this study, and the method for data collection instruments were self-completion questionnaires and structured interviews. This study showed that residential have an impact on the performance of these micro businesses. The results show residential area have positive impact on the performance of these based on the empirical evidence gathered. Two sources and instrument are used in order to substantiate the evidence. The study also showed that although location is important, it does not precede other two factors. It is recommended that an investigation on other residential areas can be conducted in other to expanded the parameters of the subject and achieve a generalisation of results. Those results will be able to complement and

further substantiate the results of this study.
