ABSTRACT

The aim of this research project is to a develop method to form a porous polydimethylsiloxane (p-PDMS) foams with one dimension having at least a few millimeters scale. There are currently five methods of making a p-PDMS. In this study, the p-PDMS will be fabricated using the curing templating methods also known as direct templating technique. In this project, the focus will be on fabrication process and characterization of a different porosity size. Four batches of samples were fabricated; dense PDMS, Small p-PDMS, Large p-PDMS and mixture of Small and Large p-PDMS. The use of organic plant as a mold was also investigated. Five types of tests were conducted to investigate mechanical properties and characteristic of p-PDMS sample of different porosity sizes. These 5 tests were compression test and compression test using the Instron 5565 UTM, oil absorption capacity test, recyclability test and microscope analysis to study the pore size using the Nikon SMZ-10A. In the characteristic test, 2 types of oil were used, petrol and diesel to find out the behavior for each p-PDMS sample react in case of oil spill.
